Recognise the problem

Is this what you’re dealing with?

Blockages often start small. Spotting the signs early usually makes them easier to deal with.

  1. 01

    Water draining slowly

Sinks, baths or showers take longer than usual to empty.

  2. 02

    Gurgling drains

Bubbling sounds from plugholes or toilets as water drains away.

  3. 03

    Toilet water rising

The bowl fills higher than normal or empties slowly after flushing.

  4. 04

    Outside drain overflowing

Gullies or inspection chambers filling up or spilling over.

  5. 05

    Unpleasant smells

Persistent sewage or stale odours inside or around the property.

  6. 06

    Water backing up

Dirty water returning through plugholes, toilets or gullies.

  7. 07

    Recurring blockages

The same drain blocking again weeks or months after it was cleared.

What we do

Clear the blockage. Find out why it happened.

Not every blocked drain needs the same treatment. We start by assessing the problem, then clear it with the method that suits it — rather than applying one fix to every job.

The right approach depends on a few things:

01
Where the blockage is
02
What is causing it
03
The condition of the pipework
04
Whether it keeps coming back

Common causes

What causes blocked drains?

Most blockages build up gradually from everyday waste. Only some are linked to damage in the pipe — the cause is confirmed once the drain is checked.

  • Fat, grease and food waste

Cools and hardens on pipe walls in kitchen drains, catching other debris.

  • Wipes and sanitary products

Even ‘flushable’ wipes don’t break down like toilet paper and snag in pipes.

  • Hair and soap build-up

A common cause of slow showers, baths and basins.

  • Debris and foreign objects

Leaves, silt, and items dropped or flushed into the system.

  • Scale build-up

Mineral deposits that narrow the pipe over time.

  • Tree roots

Roots can enter through small cracks or joints and grow inside the pipe.

  • Damaged pipework

Cracks or defects that catch waste and slow the flow.

  • Collapsed or displaced pipes

Sections that have shifted or collapsed and obstruct the drain.

Diagnosis

Find the cause, not just the blockage.

Many blockages can be located with a visual check at the access points. Where the cause isn’t clear, or the drain keeps blocking, we can use appropriate inspection techniques to see what is going on.

A CCTV camera inspection lets us see inside the pipe and check its condition. It isn’t needed for every blocked drain — we’ll tell you when it would help.

Clearance methods

The right method for the blockage.

Different blockages need different methods. Most jobs use one — we’ll explain what we recommend and why.

  1. 01

    Drain rodding

A straightforward way to break up and remove many blockages close to access points.

    Accessible blockages

  2. 02

    High-pressure water jetting

Clears stubborn build-up such as grease, scale and debris from pipe walls.

    Stubborn build-up and debris

  3. 03

    CCTV inspection

Used to confirm the cause, check the pipe after clearing, or investigate recurring problems.

    Where diagnosis is needed

  4. 04

    Root removal

Roots inside the pipe are cut back and cleared. Repairs may be recommended to stop them returning.

    Where roots are involved

Not sure which method you need?

You don’t have to know. Call and describe what’s happening — we’ll assess it and explain the approach before any work.

High-pressure jetting

When the blockage needs more than basic clearance.

Jetting sends water at high pressure through the pipe to scour away grease, scale, silt and debris that rods can’t shift.

It’s effective for build-up, but it won’t fix a cracked or collapsed pipe — if we find damage, we’ll explain the options.

Recurring blockages

Blocked again?

A recurring blockage can be a symptom of a bigger drainage problem.

If a drain keeps blocking, clearing it again may not be enough. Repeated problems can sometimes relate to:

  • Root ingress
  • Damaged pipework
  • Displaced joints
  • Structural defects
  • Persistent build-up

We can’t diagnose this over the phone. Where it’s appropriate, we may recommend further investigation before any repair is discussed.

The quickest fix isn’t always the right fix.

Where it matters, we look for the underlying problem — so you’re not calling us back for the same drain.

Common questions

Blocked drain questions.

Common causes include fat and grease, wipes, food waste, hair and soap, scale, tree roots and damaged pipes. The actual cause is confirmed once the drain has been checked.

If only one sink or toilet is affected, the blockage is often close to that fitting. If several are slow, or an outside drain is overflowing, it’s more likely further down the system. We’ll confirm this when we assess it.

Yes. We clear the blockage and, where it keeps coming back, can inspect the drain to look for an underlying cause such as damage or root ingress.

High-pressure jetting is used for stubborn build-up like grease, scale and debris. For some blockages rodding is enough — we’ll recommend the method that suits the problem.

Not always. Many blockages are cleared without one. A survey is useful when the cause isn’t clear, the drain keeps blocking, or damage is suspected.

Yes. Roots can get into pipes through small cracks or joints and grow inside, trapping debris. They can be cleared, and repairs may be recommended to stop them returning.

We’ll explain what we’ve found and talk you through the options, such as relining or repair, with a quote. No further work goes ahead without your approval.
