What is water moling?

A tunnel for the pipe, made underground.

A moling tool makes a controlled underground bore from one small pit to another. A suitable pipe is then installed through that bore.

So instead of digging a continuous trench, the digging is limited to the two access points at either end.

Why use moling?

Less of the ground opened up.

  • Reduced excavation

No continuous open trench on a suitable route.

  • Planned access points

Launch and reception points are agreed around the property and the pipe route.

  • Route assessed first

Ground, access and known services are considered before moling is recommended.

When might it be suitable?

It depends on the route.

Moling may suit routes under lawns, drives or access paths where a trench would be disruptive. Whether it works for your property depends on the factors listed.

When digging is still needed

Moling still needs two small pits.

Moling normally requires a launch pit and a reception pit. It avoids a trench along the route, but not all digging.

It isn’t suitable for every property. If the route, ground or services rule it out, we’ll say so before any work is agreed.

Assessed before it’s recommended.

We explain whether moling suits your route — and where the access points need to go — before you approve anything.
