What is pitch fibre?

A drain pipe material you may not know you have.

Pitch fibre pipes are made from wood fibre bonded with pitch. They were widely used for drainage in some older properties, particularly homes built from around the 1950s to the 1970s.

Many are still in the ground today. You won’t usually know you have them until something goes wrong — or the drain is inspected.

What can go wrong

How pitch fibre pipes can fail.

The material is softer than modern plastic or clay, so problems can develop as it ages.

  • Deformation

The pipe can lose its round shape and narrow under ground pressure.

  • Blistering and delamination

Layers of the pipe wall can lift and peel away inside.

  • Leaks

Damaged sections can let water escape or soil get in.

  • Blockages

A narrowed or rough pipe catches waste more easily.

Recognise the problem

Signs there may be a problem.

These can point to many drain issues. Only an inspection confirms whether pitch fibre is involved.

  1. 01

    Slow drainage

Water drains away more slowly than it used to.

  2. 02

    Repeated blockages

Blockages returning along the same drain run.

  3. 03

    Damp or sunken ground

Wet patches or dips above the drain line.

  4. 04

    Smells outside

Persistent drain odours around the property.

Assessing the pipe

Find out what condition it’s in.

A CCTV inspection shows whether the drain is pitch fibre, how far any deformation or blistering extends and which sections are affected.

That decides the repair — so it is always the first step.

Repair options

Repair or replace — it depends on the pipe.

Repairing is often more cost-effective. Some customers prefer full replacement for peace of mind. We’ll explain both.

  1. 01

    Repairing the existing pipe

Damaged sections are repaired, which is usually the more cost-effective choice.

    Localised damage

  2. 02

    Pipe relining

Where suitable, a resin liner is installed inside the pipe.

    Suitable sections

  3. 03

    Replacement with plastic pipework

We trace the drains, excavate correctly and lay modern heavy-duty pipe.

    Widespread damage or by preference

When replacement is right

Out with the old, in with modern pipe.

Where the pipe is too far gone, or you’d rather replace it, we trace the drain run, excavate it properly and install long-lasting plastic pipework in its place.

Fixing early is usually simpler than fixing late.

Repairing problems as they appear can avoid replacing the whole system.

How it works

How a pitch fibre repair runs.

  1. 01

    Inspect

A camera survey confirms the material and its condition.

  2. 02

    Explain the options

Repair or replacement, with a clear quote for each.

  3. 03

    Carry out the work

The agreed repair or replacement is completed.

  4. 04

    Clean up and test

We tidy the site and check the drain flows properly.

Common questions

Pitch fibre questions.

A drain pipe made from wood fibre bonded with pitch. It was used in some older properties, particularly from around the 1950s to the 1970s.

It is hard to tell from above ground. A CCTV inspection can confirm the pipe material and its condition.

As they age they can deform, blister or delaminate inside, which narrows the pipe and can lead to blockages or leaks.

Often, yes. Repairing damaged sections is usually more cost-effective than full replacement, depending on the pipe’s condition.

Where damage is widespread or repair isn’t suitable — or if you prefer replacement for peace of mind. We replace with modern plastic pipework.

Where the pipe’s condition allows, relining may be an option. The inspection tells us whether it is suitable.
