Recognise the problem

Signs roots may be affecting the drain.

These signs can have other causes too — roots are only confirmed once the drain is inspected.

  1. 01

    Recurring blockages

The drain blocks again soon after being cleared.

  2. 02

    Slow drainage

Water takes longer to drain away than it should.

  3. 03

    Water backing up

Waste returning through gullies, toilets or plugholes.

  4. 04

    Trees near the drain

Problems along a drain run close to mature trees or shrubs.

How roots get in

Through the gaps, not the walls.

Roots look for moisture. Where a drain has a small crack or a loose joint, fine roots can find their way inside.

Once in, they keep growing — even when the tree above looks dormant. Over time they can catch waste, restrict the flow and, if left, fill the pipe and add to the damage.

Confirm the cause

See the roots before treating them.

A CCTV camera inspection shows whether roots are in the pipe, where they’ve got in and how far they’ve spread.

It also shows the condition of the pipe around them — which matters for what happens next.

Removing root ingress

Cut out and cleared.

Roots inside the pipe are cut back with specialist root-cutting equipment, then the debris is cleared so the drain can flow again.

The whole problem

Removing the roots may not be the end of it.

Roots got in through a defect. If the defect stays open, they can grow back. Depending on the pipe’s condition, the options include:

  1. 01

    Pipe relining

Seals the cracks and joints from the inside, where the pipe is suitable.

    Suitable damaged pipes

  2. 02

    Drain repairs

Repairing or replacing a section that is badly damaged.

    Severe damage

Recurring blockages

Roots back again?

If roots keep returning, the way in is still open.

Repeated root problems usually point to:

  • Open joints
  • Cracked pipework
  • Displaced sections
  • Older pipe materials

We’ll show you what the inspection found before any repair is discussed.

Common questions

Root blockage questions.

Usually through small cracks or loose joints. Roots are drawn to the moisture and grow inside the pipe once they find a way in.

Roots generally enter through existing defects such as cracks or open joints rather than sound pipe walls.

Signs like recurring blockages near trees can suggest roots, but a CCTV inspection is needed to confirm it.

They are cut back inside the pipe using specialist root-cutting equipment, and the debris is cleared.

They can if the defect they came through stays open. Sealing or repairing the pipe helps stop them returning.

Not necessarily. The drain can often be cleared and repaired without touching the tree. We’ll explain what we find.

Yes. We handle root problems for both domestic and commercial customers.
