Blocked Toilet

Water rising in the bowl, slow flushing or gurgling after a flush usually means a restriction somewhere — either in the toilet itself or further down the drainage system.

Recognise the problem

Signs of a toilet blockage

A single slow flush can be a one-off. These patterns are more telling.

  1. 01

    Water rising when flushed

The bowl fills higher than normal before slowly draining away.

  2. 02

    Slow or weak flushing

Waste and paper are not carried away cleanly.

  3. 03

    Incomplete draining

The water level sits higher or lower than usual after flushing.

  4. 04

    Gurgling

Air displaced by a restriction can make the toilet — or nearby drains — gurgle.

  5. 05

    Other fixtures affected

A sink, bath or outside drain playing up at the same time points to a wider issue.

Possible causes

Common possible causes

These are possibilities, not a diagnosis — the cause can only be confirmed by investigation.

  • Too much paper or wipes

Even products labelled flushable can snag and build up in the pipe.

  • A foreign object

Items accidentally dropped or flushed can lodge in the trap or soil pipe.

  • Build-up in the soil pipe

Scale and debris can narrow the pipe over time.

  • A blockage further down the system

The toilet may be the first place a wider drainage blockage shows itself.

Is it just the toilet?

One fixture — or the whole system?

If only the toilet is affected and everything else drains normally, the restriction is often local to the toilet or its soil pipe.

If flushing the toilet makes a nearby gully gurgle or back up, or other fixtures are draining slowly too, the problem may be in the shared drainage run. That cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone — but it changes how the problem should be investigated.

If water is close to overflowing, stop using the toilet and avoid flushing again until it has been looked at.

Common questions

Blocked toilet questions

No. Repeated flushing when the bowl is draining slowly risks overflowing. Stop flushing, and if the water level is high, avoid adding anything else to the bowl.

If it is the only toilet in the property, or water is close to overflowing, treat it as urgent. We are available 24/7 and can usually respond within 60 minutes in Kent.

A plunger can sometimes clear a simple, local blockage and is generally safe to try gently. If it does not shift quickly, stop — forcing it can push the problem further down.

Gurgling between fixtures can indicate a restriction in the shared drainage run, with air being displaced past the blockage. It is worth investigating before it becomes a full blockage.

A toilet that blocks repeatedly may have an underlying cause — build-up in the pipe, an object lodged out of reach, or a defect. A CCTV survey can show what is going on.

Usually not. Most blockages can be cleared through the drainage system. If an object is lodged in the toilet itself, we will discuss the options with you first.

Need the drain cleared?

If the blockage is further down the drain rather than in the toilet itself, our Drain Unblocking service can clear it.
